Writing is hard work it requires intelligence.
So, for the record I graduated with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering, and later earned certificates in Computer Science and Business Management. But technology keeps changing, and there is even to learn with each year that passes. Therefore, I keep studying, taking online courses, reading books, attending seminars, or whatever to learn and write better, smarter, and faster.
That means you always get writing that use current techniques and technology, and in a time frame that works for your schedule.
Book smarts can only get you so far. At some point, you have to do genuine work for real people, on actual projects. For me, from 1994 to 2011, that was working as an engineer / consultant. But in 2011, I became a full-time freelance writer and editor and have done that ever since.
So, I have worked for hundreds of clients, done diverse projects. Yes, I learned a boat load, including how to manage projects as a freelancer, and that means project managing jobs I do for my clients to make sure your deadlines are met. But it also means your pieces are organized, formatted, and well managed which takes much of the stress out of working with a freelancer.
I also gained more than enough real job experience to learn how to work with the various personalities that we have as humans, to partner with every client and collaborate with teams of people on larger projects.
I know keeping the information flowing back and forth is crucial, especially in the filmmaking business. Your desires and goals are priority one for the final edit. But how do I know what that is if we don't communicate? I don't. And how do you know if the project is tracking to meet the deadline? Or how do you make that change or addition to include a great new idea you just came up with? You don't if we are not interacting.
Because of that hard truth, I go out of my way to stay in touch. It's also vital to keep you informed of issues and problems encountered along the way, to ask questions.
In short, excellent communication increases the quality of the final edit.
Yes, it can be done and it's even more powerful in some ways than the expensive, dedicated screenplay writing software everyone keeps telling you to buy.
I know, everyone has heard it. To write screenplays, you MUST buy dedicated software. Well, that's a myth, and it's busted. The word processor you already own is more than powerful enough, if you first take a little time to setup a solid template. The linked site above is dedicated to help aspiring scriptwriters on a budget, and it contains the guidance to help you build a rock solid template, without the fuss. It's a powerful tool that in some ways gives you more power than that expensive software that only does scripts.
