Yes, you can write screenplays in Word, and there are some advantages. One of the biggest, is much easier collaboration than you get with Final Draft. So, when developing spec scripts with clients, I often use Word to work closely with them, and I developed a screenplay writing template that let's us focus on the writing, not the format.
